Smile correction has come a long way since the invention of braces in the 1800s. The first modern iteration, developed by French orthodontist Christophe-Francois Delabarre, looked more like a torture device than a dental intervention. Fortunately, teeth straightening treatments have evolved significantly over the years, with clear aligners now seen as the gold standard for discreet yet effective smile correction.
Yet, in our constantly evolving field, the team behind TrioClear TM know there are always more boundaries to push, advancements to make and new treatments to pioneer.
The common problem with clear aligners
Clear aligners have become the go-to teeth straightening treatment for patients who want effective results with minimal disruption – especially when it comes to aesthetics. One of the biggest downsides, however, is that efficacy largely hinges on diligent usage. Ultimately, it’s up to the patient to follow the treatment plan to achieve the best results.
While forgetfulness is a fairly common culprit, one of the main reasons patients may underutilise their aligners is due to pain and discomfort. Single material aligner systems that employ the same thickness for each new sequence are often the cause of this pain. But the risks go beyond patient discomfort.
It is widely documented that heavy force can jeopardise direct bone resorption, risking damage to the periodontal ligament (PDL) and leading to cell death. 1 Hard, single-thickness aligners can deliver forces that are too strong for individual teeth, resulting in a higher chance of root resorption and unpredictable movements. TrioClear TM ’s innovative dual-thickness system helps to mitigate this risk.
TrioClear TM , the latest innovation in smile correction
TrioClear TM is a ground-breaking design of clear aligners. Nearly invisible and meticulously custom-designed for each patient, these removable clear aligners address many of the common challenges with smile correction – for users and practitioners.
TrioClear TM ’s key differentiator is the innovative dual-aligner system, combining a soft and a hard aligner for each treatment step. With its TrioDim Force TM Technology and fewer attachments, this approach initiates with a soft aligner, applying a gentle force to commence tooth movement. The sequence then transitions to a hard aligner, effectively completing the movement with a more substantial force. This strategic combination allows teeth to move faster than other brands in the market – 0.6mm with TrioClear TM compared to only 0.5mm with others.
The TrioClear TM system uses intermittent low forces to initiate a gentle inflammation in the PDL, nudging the teeth into movement with minimal root resorption. A recent study found that forces in the range of 0.20-0.26N/cm2 strike the perfect balance, ensuring adequate blood supply and reducing the risk of cell damage 1. As a bonus, this also minimises pain and discomfort for the patient.
The study more broadly demonstrates the benefits of using a sequence of progressive thickness aligners, concluding that it substantially reduces the force values exerted and ensures a relatively constant load increase for each set-up step. Importantly, the study found that treatment time is unaffected because a larger range of movement is possible, compared to using a single- thickness aligner system.
Results to smile about
Most dental practitioners hear the same three priorities from patients seeking smile correction – it must be fast, effective, and discreet. For one 33-year-old patient, TrioClear TM was a no-brainer from the outset. After presenting with moderate crowding, a slight deep bite and slight midline discrepancy, her dentist recommended TrioClear TM .
After just 11 months, her smile was transformed. The TrioClear TM treatment achieved functional canine guidance on both sides, improved deep bite and midline correction, and proper axial inclination of incisors. Her arches were aligned and coordinated through derotation and IPS, and her smile was visibly straighter and more aligned.
As part of her ongoing treatment plan, the patient received a set of Ecodont TM Retainers to maintain her new smile after completing the TrioClear TM treatment. These retainers are made from eco-friendly materials that are BPA-free. When finished, they can be conveniently recycled in a household yellow-lid bin.
Today, she can smile, talk, and chew with renewed confidence.

Better outcomes for patients and practitioners alike
TrioClear TM is an effective solution for cases of crossbites, overbites, deep bites, open bites, mild to moderate crowding and spacing cases. The system requires minimal attachments, is practically unnoticeable to others and has better stain-resistant properties than other popular clear aligner treatments. This makes it ideal for patients seeking a discreet solution. The progressive force approach leads to a higher compliance rate in patient usage, delivering more consistent results.
